Robert Armstrong died in a German prison camp in December 1944. Born in Monaghan and brought up in Longford, he joined the Irish Guards during the First World War. After the war, he was head gardener at Valenciennes (St Roch) military cemetery in France working for the Imperial (Commonwealth) War Graves Commission. He joined the French Resistance and was sentenced to death by the Nazis. His sentence was commuted to 15 years in jail, but he died of abuse...
